Huawei Unveils HarmonyOS PC: A Major Step Toward Independence from Western Tech

Huawei is taking a major leap in its journey toward technological independence with the official launch of HarmonyOS PC, also known as Hongmeng Computer in the Chinese market. This move marks a significant milestone as the company shifts further away from reliance on Western operating systems and software ecosystems.

The announcement was made during the HarmonyOS Computer Technology and Ecosystem Communication Event, led by Zhu Dongdong, President of Huawei’s tablet and PC division. The new HarmonyOS PC platform is built on three foundational pillars: HarmonyOS Base, HarmonyOS Ecosystem, and HarmonyOS Experience.

HarmonyOS Base: The Core Architecture At its foundation, HarmonyOS PC is powered by the HarmonyOS kernel, which drives performance, graphics, and security. The system includes the Ark Engine for enhanced UI and graphics rendering, and the StarShield security architecture, along with several backend technologies designed to deliver a seamless and secure computing experience.

HarmonyOS Ecosystem: A Growing App Library The HarmonyOS PC ecosystem already includes over 150 exclusive applications and supports more than 2,000 universal apps. Key productivity tools like WPS Office come integrated, covering essential computing needs right out of the box.

HarmonyOS Experience: Broad Device Compatibility Huawei is placing strong emphasis on compatibility and user experience. HarmonyOS PC supports over 1,000 external devices, including 800 standard peripherals and more than 20 major device categories such as keyboards, mice, and monitors. It also accommodates 200+ secondary devices like printers and scanners, offering users a truly connected and versatile workspace.

A Familiar Yet Distinctive Interface While Huawei hasn’t disclosed full UI details, a video posted on the company’s Weibo account reveals a familiar layout, featuring a dock of icons centered at the bottom of the screen—reminiscent of macOS. The operating system also boasts deep AI integration, aligning with Huawei’s broader push into intelligent device ecosystems.

Launch Date Huawei has confirmed that HarmonyOS PC will officially launch on May 19, marking a new chapter in the company’s vision for a fully self-developed, cross-device ecosystem.
